Our Rich History
Marmara University is one of the oldest educational institutions in Turkey. Its roots date back to 1883 when the Hamidiye School of Commerce was established in the İzzet Efendi Mansion in Kanlıfırın. In 1890, it moved to the Hakkı Bey Mansion in Beyazıt. After the declaration of the Republic, the school was renamed the Higher School of Commerce. The university awarded its first diplomas in 1887 and transformed into the School of Economics and Commerce in 1924-1925, becoming the first institution in Turkey to offer coeducational learning for both men and women. In 1959, the institution was renamed Istanbul Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences (IITIA). The Sultanahmet building, used by the academy, underwent various changes until the 1970s. Finally, on July 20, 1982, it became Marmara University through the "Decree on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions."
